Located in the southern most coffee producing village in the region, Yay-Win and the Danu Pa Oh community meticulously processed their crop, resulting in one of the cleanest dry-processed coffees Portola has offered. The village sits at 1600 meters above sea level and is inhabited by 43 families; all of whom contributed to this harvest. Because of the very dry and hot climate, many villages in Myanmar are well suited to produce dry processed coffees. Currently, Myanmar produces about 7500 tons of coffee per year. 80% of that coffee is Arabica.
Mandalay and Shan State two of the main producing regions in Myanmar. In Mandalay, many of the farmers own large estates with multiple hectares of coffee shrubs and produce mainly wet-processed coffees. In Shan State, most families own less than one hectare of land and a majority of coffees produced are dry processed.
The Mandalay Coffee Group (MCG) is at the helm of the coffee movement in Myanmar. While not only operating a dry mill and exporting company, MCG also creates market linkages for smaller producing communities in the country. Expect to see more coffees from this region in Portola’s lineup in the years to come.
