More than half of this farm is located within the Volcán Barú National Park, a protected ecological reserve and sanctuary for exotic plants, birds and mammals (like the tropical tiger). Hunting has been prohibited in this farm for decades. The Barú volcano is one of the highest volcanoes in Central America, with seven different climate zones depending on the elevation. Coffee in this farm is only grown up to 1,850m (6,000ft). In Panama coffee does no grow higher than this elevation.

This coffee is produced under unique conditions. First off all, the farm is located at a very high elevation (one of the two highest coffee farms in Panama). Secondly, it is grown in rich young volcanic soils, the temperatures are low and there is lots of fog and mist during the dry season.  Also, the coffee trees are surrounded by a virgin, native cloudy rain forest. The nights get cold there which extends the ripening time by one month thereby increasing the development of the bean. All these unique growing conditions contribute to a cup that is worth every penny of its price.

We have a relationship with Wilford Lamastus for years and have been proudly serving his Elida Estate coffees at Portola.  El Burro is a sister farm and this is the first year we have had the opportunity to buy this highly sought after Geisha coffee.  This is an explosive, incredibly complex, dynamic coffee.  It is full of tropical and stone fruit flavors, as well as being incredibly floral, specifically in the Jasmine department.  It is sweet, well-balanced with a lingering aftertaste.  For those unfamiliar with the Geisha cultivar, it is truly something special and should never be compared to other Arabica varietals.  Its price point is directly related to the tasting experience.  You get what yo pay for with this coffee.  We only purchased 200 lbs so if it is avaialbe, don't hesitate.
